GUIDELINES FOR MPHIL PROGRAM IN THE FACULTY OF BUSINESS STUDIES

1) Anyone who intends to get admitted in the M.Phil program of the Faculty of Business Studies must be registered as an M.Phil Student in the University and must possess the following qualifications:
a. M.Com/M.S.S/M.Sc/M.S/M.A having at least 2nd class/division.
Amendment: With a minimum of 50% marks all through his/her academic career.
b. 4-Year BBA with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 4 point scale.
Amendment: CGPA of 3.5 on a 5 point scale.
c. The duration of M.Phil program will be of two years.

2) S/he will have to complete 5 (five) courses covering both first and second semesters of MBA program. One of the courses must be relating to Research Methodology. Another course will be selected by the respective Department. S/he will have to choose other three courses with the concurrence of the supervisor. Classes of the M.Phil students will be held independently or along with the MBA students of the respective Department. [If s/he obtains CGPA of minimum 3.0 then s/he will be allowed to get promoted to second year for research work].

Amendment: If a student obtains CGPA of minimum 3.0 out of 4.00 or 50% marks in the 1st part of M.Phil exam, then s/he will be allowed to get promoted to second year for research work.

The topic/title of thesis will be jointly decided by the participant and the respective supervisor. S/he is expected to complete the thesis within one year. Subject to the approval of the Academic Council through the Department and the Faculty, the maximum time period for the completion of M.Phil course work may be two years and the maximum time period to complete the thesis may be two years from the date of registration/starting of classes/thesis work.

3) If any Candidate attains CGPA of 3.70 or above in course work, then s/he can opt for PhD program in lieu of M.Phil program. In that case, s/he will be required to prepare a pre-PhD dissertation within two subsequent semesters (one year). S/he has to defend his/her Dissertation in a seminar before the Research Committee of the Department. If the committee is satisfied, then s/he will be transferred to the PhD program and be allowed to prepare a PhD thesis within 2 (two) years. Separate rules for PhD program under the Faculty in conformity with the present M.Phil rules be drawn and made applicable after these rules become operational.

4) A Faculty Equivalence Committee (headed by the Dean and three other members) will decide the acceptability of M.Com./M.Sc/M.S./MSS/ MA/BBA candidates, securing at least 2nd class/ division and/or CGPA of 3.0 or similar marks/grades of other University/Institutes from home and abroad for getting admission in the M.Phil program (Approved).

Amendment: The Central Equivalence Committee of the University of Dhaka will decide the acceptability of M.Com./M.Sc/M.S./MSS/ MA/BBA candidates, securing at least 2nd class/division with 50% marks and/or CGPA of 3.0 or similar marks/grades of other University/Institutes from home and abroad for getting admission in the M.Phil program.

5) It is compulsory for M.Phil Students to present at least one seminar at the final stage of his/her respective thesis topic/title.
6) M.Phil program in every Department will be coordinated by a 3-member Research Committee formed by the respective Department. The Research Committee will be headed by a Coordinator.

7) All M.Phil candidates will have a minimum of one supervisor, not below the rank of an Associate Professor/ Assistant Professor with PhD Degree. If necessary, a Co-Supervisor can also be taken who must also be at least an Associate Professor/ Assistant Professor with PhD Degree.

8) Any change to these rules may be made by the University whenever necessary as per recommendation of the Faculty.

EVALUATION
Committee of Courses of concerned Department will form an M.Phil Examination Committee for each year. As regards taking of examination of the course-work of M.Phil students, the distribution of marks per course will be as follows:

Two Mid-term Tests : 30 marks
Term paper : 15
Assignment & group work/case : 15
Final Examination : 40
Total: : 100 marks

Academic Calendar will be designed by the Departmental Academic Committee.

Single Examinership will be followed for M.Phil Course work. The Examination Committee of the M.Phil program will be decided by the Academic Committee of the respective Department. An M.Phil thesis will have to be prepared in the second year of the program and will be examined as per the University Rules.
